Scientific name

Brachyura

Real-world references. Size varies with age, population and environment.

  • Native range

Worldwide, with different species in marine, freshwater and terrestrial habitats.

  • Habitat

Species occupy habitats from shores and reefs to deep water, streams and land.

  • Diet in nature

Varies widely: many scavenge plant and animal matter, while others have specialised diets.

  • Natural appearance

A broad carapace, stalked eyes and claws are characteristic. Red, brown or patterned skins should not be read as named species without an identification.

Did you know?

Crabs grow by moulting their outer shell; Brachyura refers to their short, tucked-under tail.

Brachyura is the true-crab group, not one species. The game crab has no narrower identification; real crabs have many different colours and lifestyles.
