Scientific name

Hypostomus sp.

Real-world references. Size varies with age, population and environment.

  • Native range

Tropical America; an exact native range needs a species identification.

  • Habitat

Freshwater habitats. H. plecostomus, for example, occurs in quiet lower-river waters and swamps.

  • Diet in nature

Varies by species. H. plecostomus mainly consumes detritus, with smaller amounts of algae and plankton.

  • Natural appearance

Armour plates and a broad sucking mouth are characteristic. Patterns and fin proportions vary, so one spotted skin cannot identify the whole genus.

Did you know?

Many fish once labelled H. plecostomus have proved difficult to identify, or belong to other armoured-catfish genera.

Pleco is a broad aquarium name. The game specifies Hypostomus without a species; appearance, habitat and diet differ within this genus.
